Ronas Ryon
AQHA 1984 Chestnut Stallion
SI 105  Stakes Winner of  $1,777,976
Ronas Ryon had talent and luck on his side when it came to running a race.

Bred in Florida by James Floyd Plummer, Ronas Ryon was by Windy Ryon and out of the stakes-winning Three Bargains mare Rona Bar, whose dam was by a son of Wimpy P-1.  Plummer and partners Ben Benham and W. E. “Sarge” Darden raced the stallion.

Ronas Ryon’s impressive racing career began as a 2-year-old in 1986.  At the Kansas Futurity, luck was on both Ronas Ryon and jockey Jerry Nicodemus’ side.  As the horse left the gate the saddle slipped.  Nicodemus managed to stay on and they finished the race in first place.

A few months later at the All American Futurity (G1), Lady Luck struck again.  Nicodemus, who almost never got rattled or made a mistake in the saddle, dropped his stick before he got it uncocked.  Ronas Ryon was hand ridden, which means that the jockey never touched him.  The stallion put half a length between him and his closest rival, favored Lil Bit Shiney, to win the $2 million All American Futurity in 1986.

Ronas Ryon racked up impressive numbers on the track, winning 18 of 23 races over three seasons, including five stakes wins.  In 1987, he won the All American Derby (G1) and finished second in the Kansas Derby (G1).  That same year, he set a new world record of :19.62 at 400 yards in Graham Farms Derby (G3) at Val Verde Downs in Del Rio, Texas.  The following year, he ran second at the 1988 All American Gold Cup (G1) at Ruidoso Downs.

The stallion retired from the track with earnings of more than $1.7 million.  Ronas Ryon went on to make his mark as a sire.  From his 13 crops, he sired 1,046 foals, with 763 of those starting races and 483 coming back winners.  Ronas Ryon is the sire of 48 stakes winners, 53 stakes-placed runners and the earners of more than $8.5 million.

Ronas Ryon died of a heart attack in 2000 at the age of 16.  The stallion was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2004.

Beduino
TB 1968 Grey Stallion
SI 111  Winner of $11,630.00
Beduino quarter horse, rainbow glass ranch

Bred in Mexico by Justo Fernandez Avila, the 1968 stallion was by Romany Royal by Grey Sovereign and out of Jo-Ann-Cat.

Beduino started his racing career in Mexico, running in Thoroughbred competitions. After winning his first two races at short distances, he ran in 11 Thoroughbred races and won four. In every one of his races, though, Beduino was in first place at the first turn, but his great speed and momentum would carry him to the outside and the other horses would pass him. Beduino was a sprinter, but was not allowed to enter official Quarter Horse races. His owner knew that if he could win some match races against Quarter Horses, breeders would seek the big Thoroughbred as a sire of speed horses.

Beduino won a $100,000 winner-take-all match race in 1974 at Mexico City against Champion Quarter Racing Gelding Come Six.  It was a hard race, with Beduino coming behind for the win.

In 1974, Beduino began standing at stud at the Vessels Stallion Farm when Frank Vessels, Jr. bought half of Beduino from Justo Fernandez after an exhibition race at Los Alamitos Race Course. In late 1985, Vessels’ widow, Mildred, bought the remaining interest in Beduino. “I can tell you, the second half cost a lot more than the first half,” she said in an interview. During his lifetime, he sired 19 foal crops to total 722 registered Quarter Horse foals, which included 603 race starters, 436 winners, 80 stakes-placed horses and 40 stakes winners, whose cumulative earnings totaled $13,099,594. This placed him third on the leading money-earning sires list of Quarter racehorses and as the leading Thoroughbred represented at one time.

His racing champion offspring include Brigand Silk, Chingaderos, and Indigo Illusion, as well as millionaire champions Tolltac and Strawberry Silk.

Beduino was put down May 13, 1991 at Vessels Stallion Farm in Bonsall, California, due to infirmities of old age. He was 23 years old.

Beduino was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2008.
